Changing Your Commons Password

Knowledge Commons no longer maintains a local username and password system. Authentication is now handled through CILogon, a secure single sign-on service that lets you access the platform with an existing account from a trusted provider.

Because of this change, you can no longer change your password directly through Knowledge Commons.

How to Change Your Password

To change your password, you must update it through the provider you use to sign in to Knowledge Commons. Examples include:

  • Your institutional or university account
  • ORCID
  • Google
  • Other identity providers available through CILogon

Please visit your provider’s account management or password reset page for assistance.

What Is CILogon?

CILogon was developed by scholars at the University of Illinois to support secure, institution-wide access to research applications. It allows users to sign in with accounts they already have or can easily obtain for free, reducing the need to manage separate usernames and passwords for each service.

Using CILogon improves security and reliability while eliminating the need for Knowledge Commons to maintain an increasingly complex local authentication system.
